One of my most recent writing professors used to tell me to "kill my darlings" all the time. I'd submit a story that I'd poured so much effort into...upwards of 2 or 3 thousand words. He would tell me to cut the story in half - an impossible feat for me. I actually cringed when I highlighted a sentence and hit the delete key. I realized I became so attached to my words that I couldn't see when they detracted from my writing.

It's still something I have trouble with - it goes along with "use fewer words."

Thanks for the concise words of wisdom for your fellow writers.

Helpful list. To it I would add: use contrast. Contrast is one of a novelist's secret strengths whether she opposes character types or shows contrast within a character. I liked "kill your darlings". This is something I need to remember. Thanks.

This is, indeed, the curse of the novelist. Whenever I'm reading or watching anything I'm working out the plot twists - I used to presume that everybody did it, but I've discovered to my cost (when I share my thoughts!) that it's not normal behaviour.

I gave up on Lost after the first series, largely because they seemed to be making it up as they went along. Now I look forward to discovering if you're right.

Thank you again,

The time and effort that you put into your posts is clearly visible.

They are really informative articles.

I was also really happy to see that part about "in late out early".

That has been a topic on my blog as well.

Thanks again

Happy Writing,
Nick

I see what you mean about lost but since watching series 4 it seems your theory isn't correct. I might be wrong but It is still impressive how you can work things like that out.

Just as I remember my old English teacher tell it. If you have no idea what you want to say in one sentance then you cannot possibly say it in a thousand.

Great stuff for us who dream of seeing our name in print. I liked the fact that it was easy to follow and understand. Any help gratefully appreciated.
